MLB Drama

By Alex Ganim ('23)

Did you hear about the MLB drama? If not, I’ve got you covered! When I was asked to write about the MLB drama, I hadn’t heard about what had actually happened. The MLB has this action called a “lockout” which is when there is no agreement on a situation that is between owners and players. There was an issue due to the decrease of salaries that dropped 6.4%. MLB wanted to increase the luxury tax which would keep salaries at a standstill. The MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) felt that the luxury tax would discourage competition throughout the teams because they want “to promote competition”. This issue caused the season to be shortened. There was an announcement that states that there is an agreement on the issues that the MLB was deciding. The previously postponed opening day of the season will start on April 7. Get ready to cheer on our favorite team, the Astros!!!!

Softball

By Mary Flaherty ('23) and Alex Ganim ('23)

Incarnate Word Academy’s softball season has started and it is booming! As the team continues to work hard and improve each time they are on the field, softball players share their experience with the team. Catcher, Lauren Gentry ‘24, mentions her love of the close-knit team and all the memories created from singing songs on the bus and everyone working together on the field.

The team consists of fourteen players, three managers, and coaches Rick Perez and June Hilbert. Everyone plays a significant role on the team whether it’s cheering teammates on or making great plays on the field. Manager, Lauren Richards ‘22, shared her experience of softball as a sport that connects everyone together, and creates bonds between players of different grade levels.

As districts continue, the softball team maintains a driven and open mindset to learn, play, and win! “No matter what happens on the field, I know I will always have my team which I have come to consider family.” -Samantha Martinez ‘24

Captain, Isabella Smetana ‘22, shares her experience of softball and what she has learned from playing the past four years. “When I first began playing softball here at Incarnate Word Academy, I was intimidated by not knowing anyone on the team, yet soon began creating bonds which I can confidently say will continue even after I graduate IWA. Through the cohesive support from my teammates when batting or on the field, softball is not like any other sport. The various and personalized cheers and energy from the entire team creates an experience which is unobtainable from other sports. The rush in which you feel when playing is unreal. I wouldn’t change my time on the softball team for the world.”
