Baby It's Cold Outside!

By Julia Smith ('23) & Sophia Hunt ('23)

Let’s begin a hundred years back with 1920, post World War I, textiles had just
become more affordable allowing for luxurious coats. Velvet and fur accented coats

defined the Jazz Age as we know it!

A decade later, 1930, the age of the Great Depression. This led to a popularization of
long, muted trench coats meant to go with everything and last multiple seasons. This

kept people from having to splurge on multiple coats!

The winter coats of 1940 found themselves in the World War II era, and limitation
orders restricted the availability of certain fabrics around the world! The coats of
this time were often sleek, with square shoulders and front buttons inspired by

men’s military attire.

The 50’s coats, or “swagger coats”, were often triangular in shape with large buttons
and wide sleeves. The wide and triangular design of these coats allowed them to
double as maternity wear in the Baby Boom Era, which lasted into the early sixties.

Fashion in the sixties was greatly influenced by Jackie Kennedy. This political
influence created a rise in the fondness of conservative, tailored coats!

Opposite of the sixties, 70’s fashion was all about individuality and uniqueness.
Popular coats in the seventies often included features like belts and shearling trims!

A dramatic fashion evolution occurred for both men and women in the 80s. The
trends included oversized coats, acid-wash denim jackets, shoulder pads, and neutrals!

The 90s brought about a different side of women’s fashion, a more sophisticated
style. A long oversized trench coat would’ve been the coat to have!

Fashion in the 2000s was heavily influenced by hip-hop culture. Shiny puffer coats

were the top sellers!

2010 was the beginning of faux fur coats! This allowed for a playful look, that was

animal friendly.

Currently, we see our winter coats are a mix of all these styles. Coats today are a

blend of the trends!
