Saintly Spotlight

By Hayden Coogan ('24)

Saint Angela Merici founder of the Ursulines and a passionate educator of young women in religious studies is venerated by the catholic church on her feast day January 27. Canonized on May 24, 1807 by Pope Pius VII she is the patron saint of Illness, Loss of parents, Physically challenged people, Sick people, and the Disabled. Celebrate as a natural and charming leader with a passion for educating young women spread the message of Christ in an amazing way.
St. Angela Merici was born on March 21, 1474 in Desenzano, Lake Garda, Italy. As a child at the young age of ten she tragically lost her parents soon after her and her younger sister moved in with their uncle where they grew incredibly close. Unfortunately St. Angela Merici was unable to escape more tragedy, suffering the sudden loss of her sister only a few years later. The loss of her sister greatly impacted her spiritual life and journey. The younger sister was unable to receive the last of the sacraments of the Catholic Church which caused a young Merici to question if her younger sister received salvation. In a vision Merici came to understand that her sister was in Heaven with the company of saints. This tragedy  helped her to deepen her devotion which eventually lead to her joining the Third Order of St. Francis. While in the order she began to see the impact of inadequate religious education among young girls and made it her mission to educate these young women even opening her own home to these girls. She continued this mission going on to found an institution with other consecrated women which was focused on the religious training of young girls.
One incredible story from the life of St. Angela Merici can be found in the story of her trip to the holy land. On her pilgrimage to the holy land she lost her sight in Crete. This sudden loss of sight did not stop her; she is recorded as being as enthusiastic about the journey as she was before she lost her vision. This loss of sight was not permanent while on the journey home, at the same place, her sight was miraculously restored.
St. Angela Merici lived a life of humble devotion to Christ. She continued to devote her life to service until her death at the age 65 in Brescia, Republic of Venice. Her devotion to young women's education left a lasting impact on many young girls and continued to impact many even after her death.
