New Year, New Me

By Alexandra Perez ('23)

Every year before the clock strikes midnight on the very last day of the year most people set goals for themselves going into the New Year. A New Year’s Resolution it’s called. What is a resolution? A resolution is a firm decision to do something or aspire towards a goal. Once New Year's Day hits, many people start captioning their Instagram posts with the “new year, new me!” and to say the least, we all think nothing of it. The reality is we all make these promises and think we can make them happen, but how? The focus should not just be on the new year in front of us, but the focus should be on the new me aspect of it all. The first month of the New Year is probably the hardest when we make the decision to actually start working on our resolutions. So the big question is, how do we stick to our New Year’s Resolutions if we tend to get distracted so quickly? There are many ways to accomplish your New Year's Resolutions, even by taking small steps to get there. Simple things like setting reminders on your phone, writing it down in your planner, making a vision board, or having a friend be an accountability partner are a few great ways to start. Instead of one large goal, set small goals for yourself with a reward system. Celebrate and reward yourself for each small goal you achieve. If one of your resolutions involves building a relationship with someone, reach out to them and make it happen.  Prioritize your goals and actually schedule them into your daily schedule. I believe we should also normalize that having no New Year’s Resolution is ok too.  Everyone has a whole new year in front of them and hopefully the goal is about to be a better version of themselves. The new year can also make us introspective as it can be hard to reflect back on the previous years and hardships we have been through. However, as we step into the new year, we should try hard to pull out all of the positives and leave behind the negative.  As we turn the page into a new chapter of our lives, welcome all the life lessons still ahead, set small goals, nurture good relationships, learn from the past and look forward to the future ahead by embracing the journey every step of the way!
