No More Migraines
By Leila Khan
A totality of 38 million Americans experience the devastating effects of migraines, which
include a severe throbbing headache as well as a sensitivity to light and whole body dizziness.
Normally treatment consists of multipurpose drugs that cease the progression of prior pain.
However, nonspecific treatments, such as antidepressants and anti seizure medication, contribute
to inefficiency. Due to the intrinsic hold it has upon society, clinicians have been working
tirelessly to create a drug centered on the sole ideal of migraine prevention. A protein called
calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) causes most, if not all, the pain experienced in a
migraine attack. When released into the brain, the molecule results in an onslaught of
inflammation within the brain. Growing aware that the levels of CGRP increase tremendously
during a migraine, scientists concocted a new drug, one that is specifically designed to target and
block the CGRP molecule and ultimately prevents the continuous onslaught of migraines.
