Saintly Spotlight

By Hayden Coogan

Every November 1st members of the Catholic Church gather to celebrate the lives of Saints that are known and unknown on a holy day of obligation known as All Saints Day. This tradition  originated within the Catholic Church with a feast of all martyrs on May 13 by Pope Boniface lV in 609CE. It then developed to include all saints under Pope Gregory lll during his Nov 1 dedication of St Peters in Rome. In 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered the day's general observance on every November 1st. Some saints honored on this day with feast days in November are Elizabeth of Hungary, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Elizabeth of Hungary celebrated on November 17 lived from 1207 till November 17 of 1231. During her life she was greatly devoted to helping the poor and the ill. She used her power as a beloved ruler of Hungary to feed as many as she could, showing great generosity to the poor consistently through her and her husband Ludwig’s rule. After her husband's death she was forced out of the palace but she did not allow this to stop her from serving people. She dedicated the rest of her life to service feeding the hungry and working in hospitals. She is the patron saint of Bakers, Catholic Charities, and Secular Franciscan Order.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria, patron saint of students, unmarried girls, and apologist was born in 287 and was martyred at the age of 18 in 305 in Alexandria, Egypt. Although little record of her remains, the stories of her life do. It is sad that she was educated due to her noble birth and she enjoyed it. This education and the power of the Holy Spirit helped her when emperor Maxentius, Who was against Christianity ordered 50 highly educated men to debate her and she was able to passionately defend her faith. According to tradition her oratory skills even caused some to convert. This did not please the emperor who had her arrested and tortured. He also tried to get her to rebuke her faith by proposing marriage which would have given  her incredible power but she refused. She was then sentenced to death but the first execution attempts failed and was then sentenced to beheading. Her feast day is celebrated on November 25 and she is one of the fourteen holy helpers.
